Italian Sausage Pizza Toppings

Wondering what spicy pizza toppings to put on your pizza that go with Italian sausage?

These are the toppings I suggest using on your pizza with sausage:

Peppers – your regular ones or Friarelli from Puglia

Onions

Mozzarella

A homemade tomato sauce

A spicy Italian spread/sauce like Belmorso Cannonata

Fresh or dry Italian herbs like oregano

A high quality extra virgin olive oil like Belmorso EVOO

Cannonata cannonata

What’s the difference between Sausage and Spicy Italian Sausage on Pizza?

The simple and quick answer is that Italian sausage is just tastier and filled with good ingredients that will add so much flavour to your pizza.

You don’t necessarily need to use a spicy Italian sausage. Feel free to use a regular Italian sausage, like a Toscana variety (Tuscan sausage).

Even if you use a sweet sausage you can make your pizza spicy by adding Belmorso Cannonata or super spicy by adding our Italian chilli dip.

Spicy Italian Sausage Types

If you prefer a spicy Italian sausage, I suggest trying Salsiccia Abruzzese from the Abruzzo region, the famous Lucanica from Basilicata or the Calabrian Nduja sausage.

  • Take your pizza dough and lay it on a dish with a fresh sheet of parchment paper.
  • Spread your tomato sauce, enough but not too much that it makes the pizza liquid. If you are using frozen homemade tomato sauce, add a little less as it tends to be slightly more watery.

  • Top with as much mozzarella cheese as you'd like.

  • Season lightly as your pizza is already well seasoned with the ingredients.
  • Next, sprinkle the oregano.
  • It's time to add dollops of the spicy component that will make your pizza so delicious. I am speaking about the Belmorso Cannonata, that so many rave about.

  • After that, you want to take your sausage, remove the casing and add it into crumbled pieces on top of the other ingredients.

  • Bake in a pre-heated oven for 20 to 25 minutes. I preheated my oven at 180 degrees Celsius for 20 minutes and the pizza turned out perfect.

Is Spicy Italian Sausage Actually Spicy?

Is spicy Italian sausage actually spicy?

Most spicy Italian sausage is medium spicy, so don't expect something that will set your mouth on fire. The mild spiciness makes it possible to savour all the flavours that come with a delicious and fresh Italian sausage. If you still want to taste the spiciest one try Nduja from Calabria, which is known for its heavy use of chilli.

What is spicy Italian sausage made of?

Spicy Italian sausage is made of the usual sausage ingredients in Italy plus some spicy components. The basic ingredients are a mix of low and high fat pork meat minced, a high fat component like bacon or lard, salt and pepper. The additional ingredients can include fennel seeds, dried chillies, white wine, parsley, provola cheese, as well as others.

Can you eat undercooked sausage?

Certain types of sausages, especially Italian ones, are safe to eat raw or undercooked. As for any pre-packaged or pre-frozen sausages, you should always cook them in a pan, oven or on a grill until they are fully cooked. You can measure the internal temperature with a kitchen thermometer, and that should be 160 F.
